How to Submit Your Website URL to the Search Engines

To get any useful amount of traffic to your website or blog, the search engines need to know it exists. Given time, the search engine spiders will probably find it without your help, but if you want them to crawl it sooner rather than later, you need to tell them about it.

To do this you need to submit your website URL to them for inclusion in their search engine listings.

The big three search engines are Google, Yahoo! and Bing (formerly MSN). There are of course hundreds or even thousands of others too, but they are all tiny by comparison, and in any case most of them use Google’s search engine results anyway.

Of the big three, Google is by far the biggest; it’s search engine traffic accounts for approximately 80% of all search engine traffic in the UK. Because of this, Google’s power is huge. Getting listed well by Google can make the difference between a website that is profitable and one that just costs money to run.

But, before you submit your website or blog to any search engines, a word of warning: don’t be tempted to use any kind of automated system or software to do the submitting for you. Google in particular takes a very dim view of automated submissions. Do the work yourself manually.

It will only take you a few minutes and it is well worth the effort.

Now you have submitted your URL to Google, Yahoo! and Bing, submit your website URL to DMOZ (the open directory) for consideration. The search engines take notice of listings in DMOZ and therefore so should you.
